Research Blog

After doing some research and planning I decided to do a Tabasco themed commercial. For food/ brand commercials such as these, the photographer usually includes conventions such as vibrant colors and up-close shots off the brand.

Commercials in this theme use conventions such as...

  • Promotional advertising, usually to promote the product to the consumers watching.
  • Benefits or messages within the commercial that would offer additional incentives to the buyers.
  • High key lighting, this style of lightning can allow the product to be seen as soft and bright.
  • Low key lighting, this lighting may be used as the introduction to the product. An example of this can be when the product is in frame and the audience can only see small portions of it until the end when the full image is clear.
  • Happy and up beat music are used to create joy for the audience and creates a more appealing affect towards the product they want to sell.
  • One of the most important features in this theme of commercial is color. Color is one of the first things that either has the audience continue watching or look away. A bright pop in color and contrast between the background and the product will change the visuals of a commercial.
  • Props may include different flavors, colors, and sizes of the sauce. Additionally, using objects that tie along with the theme such as peppers can create a good background prop.
When you think of Tabasco the first thing that comes to mind is "hot" or "spicy". Some symbolic conventions are the green and white logo as the name brand, and most importantly, bright red sauce inside.

  • Additionally, conventions within commercials may include catchy slogans.
  • Some slogans used in the Tabasco hot sauce brand are, "Hot and Spicy!" and "Beware the Heat".

Whether it be hot sauce, food or a bottle of water, the commercials main goal is to be appealing. The producer only has 30 seconds to either make someone love or hate their product. So using conventions that are engaging and amusing will convince the consumers to buy your product.
