Research Blog: Music Video Conventions
The song I chose called "September" was created in 1978. This song was known as being catchy and it even reached number 1 on the US R&B chart. Because this song was created so long ago many of the outfits and themes has changed. Because this song falls in the R&B and disco category many techniques were used to give it that "soul" effect.
Some examples include
- A narrative and story line structure, this means the song and video lyrics of the song usually has a story to go along with it.
- In this genre the singers would dance around and preform on stage. This meant that the camera angles would range from up close, to mid, and to long shot.
- Because most Disco and R&B singers would dance on stage the music videos would usually be filmed during a concert. For example the song I am doing was filmed while they were performing as a group. These cameras would most likely use eye angle shots and low angle shots when groups preformed in the 1970's.
-Popular editing tricks in this genre would include bright colors and special affects. The editors would add retro shapes and lines in the video as borders. Additionally the quality of old R&B/ Disco was fuzzy. Because of the time period cameras weren't as clear as they are today so music videos weren't too clear.
- Outfits and hair were a big difference in this genre. Especially in the 1970's disco wear and loud hair were popular. This can be things such as afros and flared pants.
- Moreover, because the genre R&B and Disco had many members in the groups the bands props were also important.
This genre was usually very warm colors and medium, lighting. The lighting usually came from the stages on which they preformed. When looking at older music videos in this genre there is little editing because the singers usually stay in one location. However, as time went on these videos became more storyline and had other actors and costumes for the theme.
