Genre Research: Action

The next genre of film I researched is action. When researching the meaning of action in the film it is stated, " the protagonist or protagonists are thrust into a series of events". These events usually include conflict and fighting. To create an action film many different elements are used. The first one is lighting. Lightning in this genre includes low-key lighting, high-key lighting, Rembrandt lighting, three-point lighting, and motivating light.  There is a variety of different lighting due to the different emotions and settings during action scenes. Additionally, camera angles allow the audience to see the perspective of the character. Common angles are, Some camera angles for action movies include establishing shots, ariel shots, close-up shots, mid shots, and high angle shots. High angle shots for example may create the character to seem small. Low-angle shots will make them look big and intimidating. Because of the fast-paced action, directors use camera movements such as pans, zooms, reverse zoom, tilt, and crane shots. Panning shots are a good way to follow when the actor is running away or towards someone or something. Moreover, the sound is just as important as camera work. Common sounds are asynchronous sound, synchronous sound, dialogue between characters, and ambient sound. Dialogue between characters is extremely important as it is the time the audience gets insight into the storyline/conflict. Mis-En-Scene in action movies include costumes, acting, props, makeup, etc. Makeup for example can make the actor look "beat up" and covered in dirt and bruises.  A good action movie can create the audience feeling shocked and surprised. This can be from a turn in events at the end where a "villain" may be the good guy.
