Title Research: The Shining

 - What titles are displayed during the opening sequences?

  • During the opening scene different names roll up through the screen. These names don't have clarification to what they are but the title "The Shining" appears half way. Later, in smaller font, the executive producer, screen play, and directors are shown.

- What images are prioritized in the opening sequence?

  • The prioritized images are a panning shot of mountains, valleys, water and forests.
  • The camera then pans to a road and follows a mini yellow VW Beetle car.
  • Towards the ending of the sequence, a extremely wide shot shows a large house/hotel that looks old and unusual.

 - What connotations do these images carry?

  • These images are seen as beautiful but the negative connotation come in as the music plays.

- How does the film establish a feeling of the genre from the outset?

  • Stated by the Art of The Title, "This hitherto untested stylistic choice imbues every move of the camera with a sense of tension and dread"

 - What strategies are used to ensure the film appeals to its target audience?

  • With the film begging with just outdoor settings it creates a sense of mystery.
  • The music played in the background is creepy and unsettling with the pretty atmosphere. The contrast makes it seem something bad is going to happen.

 - How has technology been used effectively? You want to consider camera angles, transitions and editing techniques.

  • After watching the opening sequence, and machine such as a drone or even helicopter seems to be the technology shown. The clips are from an aerial shot and you can see far away.
